Open Reel - General
There are many reasons to still consider open reel decks as a part of a serious home system, or a semi-pro system installation. Check some of the links below to get some ideas that are relatively new.
This page is the introduction to our Open Reel [Audio Tape] Section
Reel-to-reel audio tape recording, also known as open-reel recording, is a form of magnetic tape audio recording in which the recording tape is spooled between two reels1. +
The tape used in reel-to-reel systems is typically 1/4, 1/2, 1, or 2 inches wide and moves at various speeds1. The format was used in the first magnetic recording systems and remained popular in audiophile settings into the 1980s1.++
The resurgence of reel-to-reel in the 21st century is largely due to its superior sound quality12. By writing the same audio signal across more tape, reel-to-reel systems offer much greater fidelity at the cost of larger tapes1. This makes it a cherished choice for music enthusiasts and professionals alike3.
Reel-to-reel tape offers several advantages over other recording formats, such as improved sound quality, longer recording time, and the ability to edit recordings with relative ease4. Despite the relative inconvenience and generally more expensive media, many recording artists and audiophiles are now recording on reel-to-reel tape2.
However, it’s important to note that while the sound quality can be superior, reel-to-reel systems can be more complex and require more maintenance than other formats.
They are also generally more expensive, both in terms of the initial investment for the equipment and the ongoing cost of the tapes1.
